Sinn Féin Galway West - South Mayo Senator, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, says that figures released this week show that the numbers of people waiting for hospital appointments and languishing on trolleys in the West is still unacceptably high.

Speaking today, Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:

“Figures released this week by the National Treatment Purchase Fund for November show that 51,690 patients were on waiting lists for appointments in Galway University Hospital, Portiuncula and Mayo General Hospital. This is totally unacceptable and points to a complete failure of government policy to address the issue of waiting times.

“In Galway University Hospital (GUH) 31,534 people were waiting for outpatient appointments in November. 4,381 of these were waiting more than a year with 1,325 of these waiting over a year and a half. There were 3,098 in Portiuncula 356 of whom were waiting over 12 months.

“In Mayo General Hospital (MGH), 5,369 people were on the outpatient list. 1,004 of them waiting over a year and 252 of these waiting for over a year and a half.

“On the Inpatient waiting list there were 10,649 in GUH, 2,049 of whom were on it over 12 months. – 542 of these over a year and a half. In MGH the numbers waiting on the Inpatient list were 854 - 14 of whom were waiting over a year. In Portiuncula there were a total of 186 as well.

“The Minister for Health promised that no patient would be waiting for more than 15 months by the end of the year for treatment. It is quite clear that his target will not be met given current waiting list figures.

“This Government is incompetent and has failed to invest properly in our health service – it has continued with the mismanagement that was rampant under Fianna Fáil

“The Government is also presiding over a significant hospital overcrowding crisis, with figures for November showing that 7,407 patients were treated on trolleys across the state in November. 480 of these were in GUH, 108 in MGH & 56 in Portiuncula.

“The Government’s health policy is in tatters – we have nurses ready to strike, Universal Health Insurance is out the window and wards are in chaos.

“The Government has added insult to injury by fining hospitals across the state to the tune of €5.8 million for failure to reduce waiting lists. This is an insult to front line health workers who have reached the end of their tether with chronic under investment in our health services, including staff shortages.

“Sinn Féin set out in our alternative budget how an additional investment of €383 million would provide an extra 500 nurses, 250 midwives and 250 consultants in our front line health services. But the Government gave us the deaf ear.

“Sinn Féin has also pledged to recruit 2,500 nurses over a five year period in Government with further recruitment envisaged in a second term of office.

“It is quite clear that patients would be better off with Sinn Féin in Government.”

51,690 ar Liostaí Feitheamh Ospidéil i nGaillimh & Maigh Eo – Ó Clochartaigh

Deir Seanadóir Shinn Féin do Ghaillimh Thiar – Maigh Eo Theas, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, go léiríonn figiúirí a eisíodh an tseachtain seo go bhfuil líon na ndaoine atá ag fanacht ar choinne ospidéil agus ar thralaithe san Iarthar i bhfad ró-ard.

Ag labhairt dó inniu deir sé:

“Léiríonn figiúirí a d’eisigh An Ciste Náisiúnta um Cheannach Cóireála an tseachtain seo do mhí na Samhna go raibh 51,690 othar ag fanacht ar choinne in Ospidéal na hOllscoile Gaillimh, Portiuncula agus Ospidéal Ghinearálta Mhaigh Eo. Ní féidir glacadh leis seo agus taispeánann sé go bhfuil ag teip go h-iomlán ar pholasaí an Rialtais chun dul i ngleic le liostaí feitheamh.

“In Ospidéal na hOllscoile Gaillimh (OOG) bhí 31,534 duine ag fanacht ar choinne seachtrach i mí na Samhna. Bhí 4,381 acu seo ag fanacht os cionn bliana le 1,325 díobh ag fanacht os cionn bliain go leith. Bhí 3,098 i gceist i bPortiuncula, le 356 duine ag fanacht os cionn bliana.

“In Ospidéal Ghinearálta Mhaigh Eo (OGME) bhí 5,369 duine ar an liosta seachtrach. 1,004 ag fanacht os cionn bliana agus 252 díobh sín ag fanacht os cionn bliain go leith.

“Ar liosta na nOthar Lae bhí 10,649 in OOG, 2,049 duine a bhí ag fanacht os cionn 12 mí – 542 díobh sin ag fanacht os cionn bliain go leith. In OGME bhí 854 duine ar an liosta Othair Lae – 14 acu ag fanacht os cionn bliana. Bhí ollmhéid de 186 ag fanacht i bPortiuncula chomh maith.

“Gheall an tAire Sláinte nach mbeadh aon othar ag fanacht níos mó na 15 mhí ar chóir leighis faoi dheire na bliana seo. Tá sé ríshoiléir anois nach bhfuil an sprioc sin le sroichint, ag tógáil na liostaí feitheamh reatha san áireamh.

“Tá teipthe ar an Rialtas mí-éifeachtach seo infheistíocht mar is ceart a dhéanamh inár gcóras sláinte – tá siad ag leanúint den mhíbhainistíocht céanna a bhí againn faoi Fhianna Fáil.

“Tá géarchéim ollmhór plódú ospidéil ag tarlú faoi scáth an Rialtais seo chomh maith, le figiúirí mí na Samhna ag taispeáint go raibh 7,407 othar ar fud na tíre ag fáil cóir leighis ar thralaithe, 480 acu in OOG, 108 in OGME & 56 i bPortiuncula.

“Tá polasaí Sláinte an Rialtais ina chíorthuathail – tá banaltrai ag ullmhú le dul i mbun stailce, tá an tÁrachas Uilíoch Sláinte caite i dtraipisí agus tá léagar sna bárdaí.

“Le barr a chur ar an mí-ádh tá fíneálacha de luach €5.8m, de bharr a dteip na liostaí feitheamh a laghdú. dhá ghearradh ar na h-ospidéil ar fud an stáit Is masla é seo do na h-oibrithe túslíne atá i ndeireadh foighne leis an nganntann ollmhór infheistíochta sna seirbhísí sláinte, ganntann fóirne ach go h-áirithe.

“Inár buiséad malartach leag Sinn Féin amach an bealach a leagfadh muidne infheistíocht bhreise de €383 milliúin i leataobh chun 500 altra breise, 250 bean chabhrach agus 250 comhairleoir a chur ar fáil sna seirbhísí túslíne. Ach, is í an chluais bhodhar a thug an Rialtas dúinn.

“Tá sé geallta ag Sinn Féin freisin go n-earcóidh muid  2,500 altra thar tréimhse cúig bhliana i mbun Rialtais,  le earcaíocht breise beartaithe freisn ach an dara téarma Rialtais a bhaint amach.

“Is léir mar sin go mbeadh othair i bhfad níos fearr as le Sinn Féin i mbun Rialtais.”
