Sinn Féin Cllr. Sorcha Nic Cormaic has expressed her shock at NAMA’s rejection of an invitation by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to attend a meeting with the Special Policy Committee in relation to Social Housing.

Cllr. Nic Cormaic said:

“Given the critical nature of the provision of social housing and the huge numbers on the waiting list, I’m horrified that NAMA would fail to meet with councillors to provide detailed information as to potential construction sites, apartment and housing units under its portfolio that could be used for the provision of social housing.

NAMA can provide us with options to make better decisions and its input is vital. There is no point in the council making decisions in relation to housing in a knowledge vacuum. In answering our questions. NAMA is central to funding of social housing as per the government’s own Social Housing strategy. The council’s plans are supposed to dovetail with the government’s plans yet one of the largest providers of funding is refusing to meet with the council.

I accept that NAMA alone cannot solve the housing crisis in the area, however it has the potential to be are a major contributor. Openness and accountability are critical given the urgent demand and scale of funding required to tackle this problem.”
