End of the two-tier health system is answer to waiting lists – Ferris

15 December, 2015 - by Martin Ferris TD

Sinn Féin TD Kerry North and West Limerick, Martin Ferris has today called for radical reform to the health service in the wake the launch of the new Sinn Féin policy document: Sinn Féin Better4Health, which has universal healthcare as its main proposal.

Deputy Ferris said:

“The long waiting lists and people lying on trolleys in Kerry today are testament to the failed health policies of successive governments.

“Nationally, there were 349 people on trolleys yesterday and this is not acceptable or decent. The truth is that treatment delayed is treatment denied and it is no exaggeration to say that people are dying because of this crisis.

“The unacceptable waiting lists for access to consultants, for procedures, for treatments, for outpatient appointments, are all products of a public health system that is lacking staff, lacking resources and which is demoralised because of it.

“The private healthcare industry has been a parasite on the back of our public health system and its only motivation is profit.

“Our vision is of a quality, accessible, public healthcare system, a world-class system of universal healthcare, accessed on the basis of need, free at the point of delivery and funded by progressive taxation.

“That is now not just a vision, it is now also a plan and I am proud as a Sinn Féin deputy to be associated with it.”
