British must bring forward genuine proposals to deal with the past - Hazzard
Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has called on Theresa Villiers to bring forward genuine proposals on how the British government will meet its responsibilities on dealing with the past.
Mr Hazzard said;
"To date the British have utterly failed in their responsibilities on dealing with the legacy of the past.
"It is ridiculous for Theresa Villiers to claim that the British government's so-called compromise on the red herring of national security is granting people the right to appeal to the High Court.
"That right already exists for every citizen and there is already a huge backlog and delays in the system as the British government continues to delay disclosure to relatives of victims in the courts.
"It is clear that Theresa Villiers is selling snake oil to victims and support groups.
"Sinn Féin put forward proposals that would allow for relevant disclosure while addressing the concerns raised by the British government.
“These included the creation of an independent international panel of three judges to rule on disputes relating to disclosure emanating from either the director of the HIU or the families of victims themselves.
"Theresa Villiers and the British government now need to come forward with genuine proposals on how it will fulfil its commitments on dealing with the legacy of the past.”
