Sinn Féin comments on TUI ballot result
Commenting following the overwhelming vote in favour of industrial action by TUI members in the Institutes of Technology, Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Deputy Jonathan O’Brien called on the Minister for Education and Skills to engage with the staff on their well-founded concerns about resourcing and funding for the sector.
Deputy O’Brien said;
“TUI members in IT’s have voted 92% in favour (in 56% turn out) of industrial action against staffing cuts and funding cuts.
“It’s my view that trade union members feel they have no option but to engage in industrial action in the absence of the chronic under-funding of the sector being addressed.
“Between 2008 and 2015, IT funding was cut by over a third (35%) and student numbers increased by almost a third (32%) and lecturers employed to teach fell by 9.5%.
“IT staff are being expected to work miracles and the workload increases are simply unsustainable.
“We are calling on the Minister to engage in meaningful discussions with the union, especially now as it is the Government’s intention to proceed with the technological university bill.”
