Shambolic bill a disaster for vulnerable asylum seekers – Senator Cullinane

18 December, 2015 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane has criticized the government for its haphazard approach to the issue of immigration reform. Speaking after legislation to reform the system passed into law Senator Cullinane said:

“The International Protection Bill 2015 which had its final hearing in the Oireachtas this morning will soon be signed into law.

“The idea that this legislation is some way protects vulnerable people who want to remain in Ireland would be funny were the issue not so serious.

“This is a draconian piece of legislation which fails to protect children and minors travelling alone.

“It does nothing progressive on the issue of family reunification and opens the door for fast-track deportations.

“The government squandered a golden opportunity to end the appalling system of Direct Provision whereby thousands of adults and children languish indefinitely in a prison like system with no light at the end of the tunnel.

“As a state and as a society we deserve better.

“The government have failed us with this regressive bill by not putting the protection of human rights at the core of its raison d’être."
