Ferris calls for extension for herring fishermen
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris TD has called on Minister Simon Coveney to give an extension to the 31 December 2015 deadline for herring fishing.
Deputy Ferris said:
“Boats under 17 metres are still carrying quota which they could not fish due to recent bad weather. Between Christmas and unfavourable forecasts for the next ten days, they are unlikely to be able to fish their quota before the deadline.
“I am calling on the minister to arrange for an extension for at least the month of January, or more depending on how the weather behaves meanwhile.
“The viability of Irish fisheries is already at risk due to lack of quota, but a lack of flexibility in circumstances of heavy storms means that quota cannot be fished. There has to be an extension to allow people to make their living and not be forced to risk their lives going out in rough conditions over Christmas because of a deadline.”
