British government must end veto on disclosure - Hazzard

21 December, 2015 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has said the British government must end its veto on disclosing information on the past. The South Down MLA was responding to comments made by British Secretary of State Theresa Villiers today.

Mr Hazzard said;

"It is rich of Theresa Villiers to claim she was disappointed that issues around the legacy of the conflict could not be addressed in the recent agreement when it was her government which blocked progress.

"The British government's insistence on a veto on disclosing information to families who lost loved ones in the conflict has only added to the disappointment of victims’ groups and relatives, some of whom have been campaigning for more than 40 years.

"What we need to see from the British government now is a clear commitment to end its unfair veto on disclosure of information to all families who lost loved ones in the conflict

"Theresa Villiers and her government need to move beyond the rhetoric and face up to their responsibilities made in successive agreements on dealing with the past.

"There is an onus too on the Irish government to ensure that the British government fulfils its commitments to victims and survivors."
