Ferris welcomes withdrawal of BIM salmon farm application in Galway Bay
Speaking today after the announcement of An Bord Iascaigh Mhara that it has withdrawn its application for a salmon farm in Galway Bay, Martin Ferris TD, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on the Marine, has said that “common sense has prevailed”.
Deputy Ferris said:
“Sinn Féin has expressed grave concern about the scale of this project as it was proposed by BIM. The publication of the National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development has put a stop to it now, as it limits the size of salmon farms.
“We are glad to see that BIM has withdrawn its application for a project of such size. We believe that any future development of salmon farms must be done with sustainability in mind and after consultation and agreement with the local community.”
