Suicide prevention must be a priority - McLaughlin
Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has said there is a need to prioritise suicide prevention strategies in 2016.
The chair of the Assembly's Health Committee said;
"A new report from the University of Ulster into death by suicide has revealed some alarming statistics.
"This is an important piece of work which examines deaths by suicide in the North over a six year period.
"It found that just over half of those who had taken their own lives during that period were known to have mental health issues.
"This highlights the importance of suicide prevention measures and points to the need to prioritise such efforts in 2016.
"We have already established an all-party suicide prevention group at the Assembly to explore a range of issues around suicide and is currently looking at the zero suicide model.
"This will help to ensure that suicide prevention is kept high on the political agenda and, as chair of the Assembly's Health Committee, I will continue to work to support and develop strategies to tackle deaths by suicide."
