Concerns over planned road closure at Cartymore Cross – Senator Ó Clochartaigh

22 December, 2015

Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh is raising concerns with Galway County Council about a proposed closure of the R339 for three weeks next year.

Speaking after himself and Councillor Gabe Cronnelly met with locals in the area this week the Galway West-South Mayo Senator said:

‘Local people are concerned that as part of ongoing roadworks in the area the construction company Sisk are proposing a full closure of the R339 between Cartymore Cross and Rafterys Cross (Coshla) for three weeks next year.

‘People are concerned that this will have a very big impact on traffic in the area. The road is a very busy commuter route into Galway city with people coming in from the Monivea direction, Roscommon and East Galway. A three week closure would cause traffic mayhem.

‘A number of local schools would be impacted according to locals. These could include Carnaun, Cregmore and Lisheenkyle schools.

‘Councillor Cronnelly and myself will be raising these concerns with Galway County Council and the construction asking them to liaise with local people to put in place a more suitable traffic management plan which will allow construction to go ahead but would also accommodate people trying to traverse the section of road in question.

Imní maidir le molta bóthar Crosaire an Chartúir Mhóir a dhúnadh – Ó Clochartaigh

Tá Seanadóir Shinn Féin Trevor Ó Clochartaigh chun imní an phobal maidir le moltaí chun an bóthar R339 a dhúnadh ar feadh trí seachtain an bhliain seo chugainn, a ardú le Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe.

Ag labhairt dó i ndiaidh dó féin agus an Chomhairleoir Chontae Gabe Cronnelly bualadh le daoine sa gceantar an tseachtain seo, deir Seanadóir Ghaillimh Thiar – Maigh Eo Theas:

‘Tá imní ar phobal na h-áite go bhfuil sé i gceist ag an gcomhlacht tógála Sisk cead a lorg an bóthar R339 idir Crosaire an Chartúir Mhóir agus Crosaire Raiftearaí a dhúnadh ar fad ar feadh trí seachtaine an bhliain seo chugainn mar chuid d’oibreacha bóthar atá ar bun acu.

‘Tá faitíos ar dhaoine go gcuirfidh sé seo isteach go mór ar chúrsaí tráchta sa gceantar. Tá an bóthar seo thar a bheith gnóthach agus é in úsáid ag daoine a bhíonn ag taisteal go Gaillimh ó threo Muine Mheá, Gaillimh thoir agus Ros Comáin. Má dhúntar an bóthar ar fad ar feadh trí seachtaine beidh cúrsaí tráchta ina chíorthuathail.

‘Chuirfí isteach ar scoileanna sa gceantar chomh maith, dar le roinnt de mhuintir na h-áite. Ina measc bheadh scoileanna an Charnán, na Creige Móire agus Lisín an Choill.

‘Beidh mé féin agus an Comhairleoir Cronnelly ag ardú na ceisteanna seo leis an gComhairle Chontae agus an chomhlacht tógála, ag iarraidh orthu dul i mbun idirbheartaíochta le muintir na h-áite, féachaint le plean bainistiú tráchta atá feiliúnach a chur in áit, a scaoilfidh leo leanúint ar aghaidh leis an tógáil ach a thabharfaidh deis do dhaoine an stráice bóthar atá i gceist a thaisteal chomh maith.'
