Minister's referendum call a futile pre-election effort - Mac Donncha

29 December, 2015 - by Mícheál Mac Donncha

The call by Labour TD for Dublin North Aodhán Ó Ríordáin for a referendum on Irish Water ownership has been described as a 'futile pre-election effort to save his political skin' by Sinn Féin Cllr Mícheál Mac Donncha, a General Election candidate in Dublin Bay North.

Cllr Mac Donncha said:

"Communities in Dublin Bay North led the campaign against water charges, water metering and the Irish Water quango while Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, their TD, continued to defend this entire Government fiasco. Now he attempts to rescue his credibility by making a pre-election call for a referendum on Irish Water ownership.
"It is a futile pre-election effort to save his political skin.

"There certainly should be a referendum to ensure that water remains in public ownership. But prior to that the water charges should be scrapped and the metering programme halted. Deputy Ó Ríordáin, if he was listening to the people of his constituency, would demand nothing less." ENDS
