Single Shannon authority should be first item on Cabinet meeting agenda – Adams
Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams has said that a single authority with ultimate responsibility for the River Shannon is essential in light of recent flooding.
The Louth TD was responding to a statement from junior Minister Simon Harris who said the Taoiseach has called a meeting on Tuesday with agencies and government departments with responsibility for the Shannon.
Deputy Adams said:
“This Government has failed to deal with the issue of flooding in any strategic way and, as a result, we have seeing a repeat of serious problems witnessed in the past and the situation is getting worse.
“A huge amount of the flooding we have witnessed has been in the Shannon region. The fact that there is no single agency responsible for management of the River Shannon is ludicrous.
“In the Dáil before the Christmas break, I called on the Taoiseach directly to ensure a single agency had ultimate responsibility for management of the Shannon.
“Mr Kenny rejected my request but gave no logical reason.
“I believe the first item on the agenda of the Cabinet meeting on Thursday should be to allocate responsibility to the OPW for management of the Shannon.”
