Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton is failing young people – Councillor Denise Mitchell

5 January, 2016 - by Denise Mitchell

Beaumont Donaghmede Councillor Denise Mitchell and General election candidate for Dublin Bay North has said that the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton is failing Young people.

Councillor Mitchell said,

“With youth unemployment still at 9% higher than pre crisis times it is quite clear that the Government’s strategy is not working.

In addition 1 in 4 Young people under the age of 30 have emigrated since the crisis took hold, it is clear that this Government are not doing enough to support young people getting employment.

In many cases when young people secure employment they are not getting paid much, their wages aren't growing and their hours are often precarious.

This has a knock on affect in their ability to find a home with many young people being forced to live at home with their parents as they cannot afford to buy or rent in the current climate.”

She further added,

“Sinn Féin has and will continue to put practical and realistic ideas on the table on how to tackle youth unemployment. We have put forward proposals such as assessing each individual unemployed young person and setting out a plan to get them back to work. We have also proposed making more CE schemes available specifically to young people.

Minister Bruton has not prioritised young people in his five years in office.   Over the coming months he needs to support young people in getting them into employment and creating a life in Ireland.”
