McMullan welcomes UNESCO World Heritage status for Gaelic Games
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has welcomed news that Gaelic games have been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status.
Mr McMullan said;
"Gaelic Games have made a huge contribution to Irish life, culture and heritage for many years.
"The announcement that both Gaelic football and hurling will both now be awarded UNESCO World Heritage status is fantastic news.
"Hurling is a sport without equal anywhere in the world and it is only fitting that it is given this prestigious recognition.
"In the Glens of Antrim, hurling is a way of life for many and has been for centuries. This designation will allow the world to see the brilliance and skill of the sport and those who play it.
"Alongside Gaelic Games, Irish folklore and uillean piping – also very strong traditions in the Glens area – have also been included for designation.
"This is an excellent showcase for Irish culture and all those involved in these living traditions are to be commended."
