Nic Cormaic claims Dundrum side-lined by Council

6 January, 2016 - by Sorcha Nic Cormaic

Sinn Féin councillor Sorcha Nic Cormaic has robustly criticised the decision made by the Parks Department of DLR Co Co to locate both proposed 1916 Gardens of Remembrance in the east of the constituency, neglecting the Dundrum area.

Speaking this morning Cllr Nic Cormaic said:

“Last year at a Council Meeting where the 2016 celebrations were being discussed I raised the issue that some permanent structure was needed on the Dundrum side of the County, which would act as a focal point for commemorating 1916.

“Dun Laoghaire had Deansgrange, Roger Casement and other focal points that they would be able to use when the time came.  There was broad agreement from Councillors from both sides of the County that it would be considered by the 1916 Commemorations Committee.

“During the next few months the commemorations committee decided the Council would deliver two Gardens of Remembrance, one for each side of the County, this seemed to me to be appropriate.”

However, at a recent Community SPC (Special Policy Committee) a brief overview of events was given and mention of the two gardens was made.

“I enquired as to the location of the gardens and was horrified to discover that both would be on the Eastern side of the N11; 1 in Blackrock Park and 1 in Cabinteely Park, and both a stone’s throw from Deansgrange Cemetery.  (While technically Cabinteely Park is in the Stillorgan Ward, no rational person would consider that gardens in Blackrock Park and Cabinteely Park service both sides of the county.  Look at the map, the N11 divides the County down the middle).”

Objecting to the fact that repeated calls for having a focal point on the Western side of the county were completely ignored Nic Cormaic was highly critical of the decision making process.

“The decision was made over emails, with no debate or discussion, and my Sinn Féin colleague Shane O Brien, who was on the committee, was originally left off the email list.

“Requests by me for information on the decision making process have also been ignored.  I was told informally told that Ballawley Park was considered and Marlay Park, but both were deemed inappropriate.”

Cllr Nic Cormaic has submitted a motion to the Dundrum Area Committee meeting scheduled for 25-01-16 that some action be taken to ensure a 1916 commemorative site be developed in or around Dundrum, and hopes for support from the other ward councillors.
