If Leo Varadkar is not up for tackling the chaos in our health services then he should just go - Pearse Doherty TD

7 January, 2016 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féín TD Pearse Doherty has said the crisis in our hospitals is a national scandal.

Deputy Doherty said this government’s legacy in health after five years in government is utter chaos highlighted yesterday by the HSE’s call on GPs not to refer patients to Beaumont Hospital.

He said if Leo Varadkar is not up for the job then he should just go.

Deputy Doherty said;

“Investment in our public services is not on the agenda for Fine Gael and as a consequence it is not on the agenda for the Labour Party either.

“This crisis was completely predictable.  If you do not invest in services then you end up with chaos.

“And the most worrying thing is that the government has no plan to change their approach to public services.  If re-elected they will continue to run our public services into the ground.

“Sinn Féin has a comprehensive plan to bring about a fully resourced public health service.  Where this government wants to give tax cuts to the wealthiest, Sinn Féin wants to invest in quality public services that will benefit everybody.

“The chaos in our health services is the legacy of this Fine Gael/Labour Government after five years in power evidenced yesterday by the HSE’s call on GPs not to refer patients to Beaumont Hospital to ease pressure on the over-burdened Emergency Department there and by the fact that our nurses are going on strike next week.

“This is a national scandal and if Leo Varadkar is not up for tackling this then he should go. He should go and allow the people to elect a government that will invest in our public services and put an end to this chaos.”
