Varadkar bluffing his way through health crisis as January trolley figures for Dublin soar towards 600 - Mary Lou McDonald TD
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Central Mary Lou McDonald has stated that the Fine Gael led government has no tangible plan for the health service and has said that citizens are growing tired of Minister Varadkar’s ongoing attempts to bluff his way through the crisis.
Speaking this morning Deputy McDonald said:
“For the month of December we had 1,485 patients on trolleys across Dublin, with over 5,000 lying on trolleys across the state.
“So far in the first week of 2016, according to INMO Trolley Watch figures, we have had 576 patients lying on trolleys on hospitals across the capital city.
“This is simply not good enough and the Minister cannot continue to peddle the same lines about what his department is doing to remedy the crisis.
“An unfortunate example of government chaos in health is evidenced by the ongoing emergency department situation in Beaumont, with 195 patients on trolleys this week alone, it is no wonder that nurses are at the end of their tether.
“Sinn Féin is the only party with a costed vision and plan for the health service.
We desperately need more frontline staff to deal with emergency department overcrowding in a comprehensive manner.
“Every year it’s the same old story, surplus budgets, closed beds and emergency department overcrowding.
“This government has failed in the provision of health services and the upcoming election will give voters to opportunity to vote for the current chaotic status quo or to vote for Sinn Féin, a party that actually has a plan for the health service.”
