Funding to Leopardstown racecourse should be decreased and redistributed into local social and sports facilities- Nic Cormaic

11 January, 2016 - by Sorcha Nic Cormaic

Cllr. Sorcha Nic Cormaic has called for a reduction in council funding to Leopardstown racecourse and for it to be redistributed into local social and sporting facilities.

Nic Cormaic said:

“Last year Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council gave a grant of €20,000 to Leopardstown racecourse for its annual Christmas event. The racecourse generates millions in revenue each year from this event. Council resources are limited as it is, and this disproportionate grant sum is leaving other areas of the community under pressure for funding. For this reason I believe that the grant money given to them in this amount is unnecessary.

Nic Cormaic added:

“The 2016 DLR grants scheme is to be approved this coming Monday Jan 11th at the full county council meeting. I am calling for the grant money given to Leopardstown racecourse to be reduced to €5,000 with the remaining money being invested into other sporting and social groups in the DLR area.

The extra €15,000 that would become available would be able to make a serious difference not only to the facilities that apply for the grants but also the surrounding local businesses and community.
