Ní Chuilín welcomes announcement on student housing plans
Sinn Féin MLA Carál Ní Chuilín has welcomed today's announcements on contentious student housing developments in north Belfast.
Ms Ní Chuilín said;
“The issue of housing in North Belfast is very sensitive given the legacy of social housing discrimination which has impacted disproportionately on the Nationalist community.
“With land at a premium clearly the applications for student housing has caused concern to all of us working for housing equality for local people.
“I welcome the news that some of the most contentious applications for student housing have been rejected. This will come as a relief to many.
“There is clearly a need to manage the demands of people waiting years in some cases for a home with the objective of developing the full potential of the Ulster University and student housing.
“We need to manage the available land in a sensible and co-operative way in the best interests of everyone.
“I’ve requested an urgent meeting with the new Minister for Social Development along with local campaigners and businesses in the quest to find an agreed way to proceed.
“Today’s news on planning approvals and rejections is an indication of the complexities this community is facing in the difficult task of addressing need while regenerating and investing in the north side of the city.”
