More women needed in politics
Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane has said it is important to encourage more women into politics. The South Down MLA was speaking after attending an event in the University of London to discuss the role of women in politics.
Ms Ruane said,
“It is important we encourage more women to enter the world of politics and participate in the democratic process.
“In Ireland women make up over 52% of the population yet only 18% of political representatives here are women.
“Sinn Féin has led the way in promoting women and I am proud to say that three out of our four MEP’s are women as are three out of our five Ministers in the Assembly.
“Over 30% of our elected representatives in the Assembly are also women and the party is looking at ways of increasing this at the next election.
“The seminar in London was a worthwhile exercise in which I was able to hear the experiences of other female politicians from different parties and parliamentary forums as well as other women’s groups involved in politics.
“I hope to be able to bring some of the best practice back to Sinn Féin in order to encourage more women to become more involved in politics.”
