Joan Burton must produce costings for her childcare policy - McDonald

14 January, 2016 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

During an exchange with the Tánaiste at Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil today, Sinn Féin TD and Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald challenged Joan Burton to produce the costings for her childcare proposals which were launched this week.

Speaking after the exchange, Deputy McDonald has repeated her challenge to the Tánaiste and said Sinn Féin will produce a fully costed, deliverable and comprehensive childcare policy next week.

Deputy McDonald said;

“Having cut child benefit twice during her term of office Joan Burton today tried to take credit for partially reversing those cuts ahead of the election.

“Once again she could not answer a simple question that I put to her about the costings of her childcare proposals which she has published in the mouth of an election after five years in government.

“The Tánaiste should publish the costings, if she has them, of her proposals.  It is not good enough for party’s to produce uncounted proposals to be put to the electorate.

“In my own view this is just a cheap election gimmick designed in an attempt to win votes from the very people that the Labour Party has let down for five years.

“Sinn Féin will produce a fully costed, deliverable and comprehensive childcare policy next week.  And, unlike the Labour Party, we will deliver on our promises to the electorate if we win a mandate to do so.”
