Girdwood community complex a groundbreaking leap forward - Kelly
Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has said the launch of a multi-million pound community complex at Girdwood in north Belfast is a groundbreaking leap forward for the area.
Mr Kelly said; "At last the day has arrived when we finally realise the vision set out for this former British army Barracks for the good of the whole community of North Belfast.
"Today is a fantastic day for everyone who campaigned for this site to become a hub of leisure, housing, community activity, training and employment opportunities.
"Yet this is only the start of unlocking the full potential of what will be possible here at Girdwood.
"We are sending out a message of hope and political leadership because if it can be achieved in North Belfast it can be achieved anywhere."
Adding her voice to the celebrations at the EU funded community hub, Sinn Fein MLA Carál Ní Chuilín said;
"I’d particularly like to pay tribute to the local community activists who worked so hard to break down the barriers on what was once a problematic interface in this area to help to deliver what can become an icon of peace building.
"The impact this investment will have on surrounding communities will be massive and will improve the lives of those who have gone without essential services for far to long.
"Much remains to be done and that work is under way but today is about inclusion, celebration and hope for North Belfast and beyond.
"There’s a real buzz about so many local projects which have been years in the making suddenly all arriving at once including Girdwood, GAA and educational facilities, the University expansion multiple community projects and so much more."
