MoD responsible for Ballymurphy inquest delays - Sheehan
Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan said the British Ministry of Defence is responsible for delays in the inquests of those killed in the Ballymurphy massacre.
Speaking after attending a legacy hearing with the Ballymurphy families at Laganside court today, Mr Sheehan said;
"Today's hearing was another step forward for the Ballymurphy families in their long campaign for truth and justice.
"It became abundantly clear during the course of today's hearing however, that the reason for the delays in this case has been the British Ministry of Defence's continual attempts to block and delay progress.
"To date only one of the British soldiers involved in the Ballymurphy massacre has been identified. That should be the starting point.
"That needs to be the priority to establishing the truth about what happened in Ballymurphy in 1971.
"The Ministry of Defence needs to take this seriously and put the resources in place to trace all soldiers involved.
"Lord Justice Weir has said the Ballymurphy inquests could be concluded within a year. The families have waited too long for truth and justice and any further delay is unacceptable."
