Hazzard welcomes two schools' plans to abandon academic selection
Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has welcomed news that two grammar schools in Omagh have announced plans to end academic selection.
Mr Hazzard said;
"Academic selection is outdated and unfair and has a negative impact on pupils, our education system and our society.
"I welcome the news that both Omagh CBS and Loretto Grammar School in Omagh have announced plans to end academic selection from next year.
"Both schools have proposed to end controversial entrance exams for year 8 pupils from September 2017.
"These schools are the latest in an increasing number of schools who are choosing to abandon this unfair system.
"Everyone interested in the delivery of high-quality education for everyone, as well as equality and social justice, to follow the example of these schools and reject academic selection once and for all."
