UCD to host demonstration against ongoing detention of Ibrahim Halawa
UCD Sinn Féin, in partnership with UCD Students' Union, is holding a demonstration against the continuing unlawful detention of Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa and is calling for his immediate release and return to Ireland.
The demonstration will take place on 26th January at 6.00pm outside the Egyptian Embassy, Clyde Road, Ballsbridge.
Guest speakers at the demonstration will be Marcus O'Halloran, President of the UCD Students' Union and Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice and Equality.
Attending the demonstration will be Somaia Halawa, Ibrahim's sister and former UCD student.
The event will be chaired by Lynn Boylan, Sinn Féin's MEP for Dublin, who has been a leading campaigner on Ibrahim's case.
Ibrahim Halawa who was aged 17, has now been under arbitrary detention in an Egyptian jail, with his court trial being delayed twelve times so far in the past three years.
At this stage, it is safe to say that Habeas Corpus has been effectively suspended, and this is now a serious human rights issue.
With the gravity this case we are urging all to attend and show support and solidarity with Ibrahim and his family.
