Only a Sinn Féin led government can stop water charges - McDonald

21 January, 2016 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Speaking this morning at the launch of a Sinn Féin billboard, in advance of Saturday’s state-wide local Right2Water demonstrations, Sinn Féin Vice President Mary Lou McDonald TD has said that only a Sinn Féin led government will stop water charges and ensure our water supply is kept in public ownership.

Deputy McDonald said:

“Water charges are the product of Fianna Fáil’s term in office and have been wilfully implemented by Fine Gael and Labour, despite the latter’s pledge at the last general election not to introduce them.

"The debacle that is Irish Water has seen millions upon millions of euros wasted in pursuit of implementing an unfair and unjust tax that hits low and middle income families hardest. Irish Water must go, and water charges must go.

“Sinn Féin have given a clear commitment going into the general election that we will abolish domestic water charges, end the current metering project and redirect remaining funding into direct investment in water infrastructure. Only a Sinn Féin led government will do that.

“We will also hold a referendum to enshrine public ownership of Ireland’s water services in the Constitution so that no future Government can offload one of our most vital assets to the private market."Over the last eighteen months we have seen hundreds of thousands of citizens make a stand and take to the streets to demand an end to water charges. It is vital that people use their vote in their upcoming election to put an end to water charges and protect our water services, and we are again encouraging as many people as possible to attend their local Right2Water rallies this coming Saturday."
