Doolan- No fast tracked incinerator for Ringsend

21 January, 2005

Sinn Féin Representative for Dublin South East, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has welcomed "Minister for Environment Dick Roche's acknowledgement that the proposed incinerator for Poolbeg Peninsula will not receive fast track planning."

Speaking this morning Cllr. Doolan said:

"I firmly believe Minister Roche's comments are directly linked to the fact that the community have run a very successful campaign here on Dublin's south side. The Minister now realises he would simply not get away with attempting to fast track this hazardous incinerator into place.

The real challenge for facing us is not where or how we build an incinerator but how we deal with the current waste crisis. Sinn Féin have continued to work for a Zero Waste Strategy, whereby we reduce, reuse and recycle our waste rather than attempting to burn or bury it."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan said, "never mind not fast tracking the incinerator, the Minister had better realise that there will not be any incinerator for the Poolbeg Peninsula. That land has already been rezoned in the City Development Plan to exclude any incinerator."ENDS
