Adams urges support for Right2Water event on Saturday
Sinn Féin has today produced a billboard in advance of Saturday’s state-wide local Right2Water demonstrations.
Louth TD Gerry Adams TD is urging citizens to “join the Right2Water protest that will be held in Fairgreen, Dundalk at 2pm on Saturday.”
The Louth TD said:
“Sinn Féin is committed to abolishing water charges, ending the current metering project and redirecting remaining funding into direct investment in water infrastructure. Our water supply must be kept in public ownership.
“Water is a human right and while water services must be paid for, this must not be done through a double tax on hard pressed citizens. The water charges, - the brainchild of Fianna Fáil - coupled with other taxes and charges imposed by Fine Gael and the Labour Party, are crippling households and families.
“From the outset, Irish Water has been mired in scandal. It is a toxic entity, which has become synonymous with everything that is wrong with this Government, namely, cronyism, political manipulation of State boards, threats to citizens and escalating taxes on struggling families. For these reasons, the organisation cannot be left with responsibility for the delivery of water services in this State.
“Sinn Féin has given a clear commitment going into the general election that we will abolish domestic water charges. Only a Sinn Féin led government will do that. In the north Sinn Féin successfully opposed the introduction of water charges.
“Sinn Féin is also committed to holding a referendum to ensure that the public ownership of our water services is enshrined in the Constitution.
“It is vital that people use their vote in their upcoming election to put an end to water charges and protect our water services."
