Rural home help crisis ‘a disgrace’ – Ó Clochartaigh
Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, Sinn Féin spokesperson on the West, has called on the Minister for Health to explain his failure to deal with the crisis in the rural homecare service. Speaking during debate on rural Ireland, Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:
“The outsourcing of homecare services to private companies is an absolute disgrace.
“We have a situation where carers employed by these companies are paid subsistence rates of pay and have very poor working conditions.
“I’m told in most cases carers are expected to travel from house to house and are not in receipt of travel expenses.
“This has resulted in a shortage of staff as people cannot make a decent living from low pay and poor working conditions.
“The knock on effect of staff shortages on service delivery is that that people who should be living at home are now languishing in hospitals and nursing homes.
“The outsourcing and privatization of the homecare service has a particular impact in rural Ireland and results in serious disadvantage for already vulnerable people.”
