FG & Labour still forcing young people to emigrate – Ó Clochartaigh

Enda Kenny and his government are still forcing thousands of young Irish people to emigrate, despite the spin they are putting on the economic figures, says Galway West – South Mayo Senator, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking today the Sinn Féin Rural Affairs spokesperson said:

‘The real picture of emigration and unemployment is being masked by this government in the hundreds of thousands of people who have emigrated and the large numbers on so called ‘activation’ schemes.

‘The reality is that 35,000 young Irish people (under 25s) emigrated from Ireland last year. This is still higher than the number that emigrated in 2010, and it is almost three times the number that were emigrating in 2006.

‘CSO figures show that the majority of people emigrating were either at work or studying prior to leaving Ireland, with fewer than one in seven unemployed and half of emigrants having a third level degree or above.

‘Research by the National Youth Council with emigrants shows that there is a broad range of factors in Ireland causing emigration and hindering the return of emigrants include precarious working conditions and poor salaries, a lack of career opportunities and limited career progression options in Ireland, the inability to have a career outside of Dublin and the increasing cost of living.

‘The west has been disproportionately affected by the blight of emigration and this government have failed us here when it comes to sustaining our rural communities.

‘Sinn Féin’s approach would be radically different and our rural proofing of policy would help reverse these trends and make rural areas viable places to live and work in again.

‘Rural communities would be better off with Sinn Féín in government.’

FG & LO ag cur brú ar an aos-óg dul ar imirce go fóill – Ó Clochartaigh

Tá Enda Kenny agus a rialtas fós ag cur brú ar na mílte duine óg dul ar imirce, in ainneoin a gcuid bolscaireachta ar fad maidir le figiúirí eacnamaíocha, a deir Seanadóir Ghaillimh Thiar – Maigh Eo Theas, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Ag labhairt do inniu deir urlabhraí Gnóthaí Tuaithe Sinn Féin:

‘Tá an fíor-phictiúr don imirce agus an dífhostaíocht dhá cheilt ag an rialtas seo sna céadta mílte duine a d’fhág an tír nó atá ar scéimeanna ‘gníomhachtaithe saothair’ mar a thugtar orthu.

‘Is é lom, lár na fírinne ná gur fhág 35,000 Éireannach óg (faoi 25) an tír arís anuraidh. Tá sé seo níos airde fós ná an líon a d’imigh ar imirce i 2010 agus trí oiread an méid a d’fhág i 2006.

‘Léiríonn figiúir ón Lár Oifig Staidreamh go raibh formhór an dream atá ag fágáil i bhfostaíocht nó ag staidéar sular imigh siad agus ní raibh dífhostaithe díbh ach duine as gach seachtar agus céimeanna ollscoile nó níos fearr ag ós cionn leath acu chomh maith.

‘De réir taighde atá déanta ag Comhairle Náisiúnta na nÓg is iomaí cúis imirce atá ag an té a fhágann an tír, nó a chuireann bac ar dhaoine filleadh, ina measc - coinníollacha leochaileacha oibre agus droch phá, easpa deiseanna dul chun cinn ó thaobh gairme di in Éirinn, an easpa ó thaobh deiseanna fostaíochta agus forbairt gairme lasmuigh de Bhaile Átha Cliath agus an méadú atá ag teacht ar an gcostas maireachtála.

‘Bualadh an Iarthar níos measa na áiteanna eile ag an imirce agus theip an rialtas seo orainn ó thaobh cosaint agus tacaíocht a thabhairt do phobail tuaithe.

‘Bheadh cur chuige éagsúil ar fad ag Sinn Féin agus chuideodh an polasaí profáil tuaithe atá againn leis an gcúlú seo a chloí agus cinntiú gur féidir le daoine maireachtáil agus oibriú sna pobail tuaithe ar fud na tire arís.

‘Bheadh pobail tuaithe níos fearr as le Sinn Féin i Rialtas.’
