McLaughlin welcomes all party group on suicide prevention
Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has welcomed news the Assembly is to set up an all-party group on suicide prevention.
Ms McLaughlin, chair of the Assembly health committee said;
"Suicide is an issue that impacts on every walk of life yet it is often hidden in our society.
"The issue of suicide prevention is a top priority and I am pleased that we have now got agreement to establish an all-party group focused on suicide prevention.
"The aim of this group is to ensure that suicide prevention remains high on the political agenda.
"In 2014 we had 268 deaths by suicide in the north; each and every one of those lives lost was a tragedy. We must do everything we can to support all suicide prevention initiatives.
"The group will also examine the zero suicide model that is currently in place in some parts of the United States and also in parts of England to see if we can apply the same lessons here.
"The new all-party group will hold its first meeting on February 1 and I look forward to its work."
