Staff Shortages in Beaumont Hospital getting worse not better–Councillor Denise Mitchell

26 January, 2016 - by Denise Mitchell TD

“General election candidate for Dublin Bay North Councillor Denise Mitchell has said that staffing levels at Beaumont Hospital need to be looked at urgently as shortages continue to rise.

Speaking after figures she received today in relation to the shortages in Beaumont, she said,

“I am appalled to learn that Beaumont hospital is operating at a staff shortage of 235 vacancies.

The bulk of these come from the critical area of nursing with 116 in that department.

This is not acceptable but is also very worrying in that when I asked the same question back in October I was advised that staff shortages in the hospital were 143 and 62 of these were in Nursing.

That is a huge increase and is a clear indication that attempts to address the shortages by the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar is simply not working. “

She further added,

“It is quite clear patients in our hospitals cannot take another five years of the Fine Gael/Labour Government.

They have made our hospitals an unattractive place to work because of their unwillingness to invest in our Health Service.

If elected to government Sinn Féin will recruit 6,600 additional frontline health workers including nurses, midwives and consultants” End
