Gerry Adams speaks to newly elected Palestinian President

23 January, 2005

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MP this evening spoke to the recently elected Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Speaking after their telephone call Mr. Adams said:

"I congratulated President Abbas on his recent electoral victory and wished him well in his efforts to bring about a just and lasting peace for the Palestinian people and the formation of a Palestinian state.

"President Abbas is faced with many enormous challenges. I told him he has the overwhelming good wishes of the people of Ireland in his endeavours.

"I believe that it is imperative that the international community respond by doing all in its power to ensure that the Israeli government end its preconditions, and remove the obstacles to immediate and fair negotiations with the Palestinian government.

President Abbas and I also spoke about my desire to visit Palestine and we looked forward to my travelling there soon." ENDS
