Rights and dignity of older people must be upheld – Jennifer McCann

1 February, 2016 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann said the rights and dignity of older people must be respected and upheld.

Speaking at an event organised by the National Pensioners convention in Belfast this morning she said,

" It is important that as people get older their right to dignity, respect and financial security are respected.

“They are entitled to good quality health and social care which meets their individual needs and ensures they are not socially isolated.

“The fear of crime, fuel poverty, transport and the need for adequate domiciliary care are issues continually raised by the sector.

“It is important that we as policy makers listen to those concerns and deliver services in a way that allows them to make decisions about their lives.

“Older people make a valuable contribution to society in terms of the economy and in terms of its social fabric.

“We must always ensure their rights and dignity are protected and they are recognised for the contribution they make."
