Essential that reliable broadband extended to all areas - McMullan
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said it is essential that reliable broadband is extended to all areas.
Speaking after meeting with Ofcom at the Assembly today, Mr McMullan said;
"Access to reliable broadband is crucial in today's society both for business and personal use.
"It is particularly important that people living in rural areas are able to access fast reliable broadband as so much agricultural business is carried out online.
"Given the remote nature of some rural areas, particularly in the Glens area, many people still do not have access to any broadband at all.
"After being contacted by many residents in the Glens area, I organised a meeting with Ofcom's regulatory affairs manager to discuss what can be done to improve broadband in rural areas.
"I raised the concerns of those living in rural areas and we discussed the possible alternatives to fixed line broadband such as mobile, fixed wireless or satellite.
"While none of these are substitutes for a full roll-out of broadband across all rural areas as soon as possible.
"I will continue to work with Ofcom in the time ahead to ensure the delivery of reliable broadband to all areas."
