Ó Muilleoir welcomes commitment on air route development fund
Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has welcomed a commitment by Enterprise Minister Jonathan Bell to put in place an air route development fund before the end of the Assembly mandate.
Mr Ó Muilleoir said;
"I am on record as opposing air passenger duty (APD) because it places a brake on visitors but short of agreement on scrapping APD, it’s crucial that the mooted air route development fund is made a reality before Easter.
"I am confident this could give a shot in the arm to local airports and lay the ground for a direct air route between sister cities Belfast and Boston.
"In the Assembly today, I asked the Minister to ensure this fund is up and running before the end of this mandate and am heartened by his positive response.
"Tourism is 9 per cent of GDP south off the border and just 6.5 per cent of GDP in the North, if we are serious about realising our full tourism potential, we need to do more.”
