Anderson MEP expresses strong concern for hunger-striking Palestinian Journalist
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has expressed strong concern around the condition of Palestinian journalist Mohammed Al-Qiq, who has been on hunger strike for 78 days now.
Speaking from Palestine, Ms Anderson said,
“Today I met with Mrs Nisrenn Azzeh, the widow of Palestinian activist Hashem Azzeh. Hashem died aged 54, reportedly of heart failure after inhaling tear gas in October 2015.
“Nisrenn expressed the pain of her loss and it led into a discussion about the current critical condition of Mohammed Al-Qiq, who if the Israeli authorities do not act soon, will also leave behind a widow.
"Mohammed's condition has been described as being 'close to death.'
“Last week his wife Fayha Shalash rejected the notion that he was a member of a Palestinian armed group, of which he was accused.
“Al-Qiq has been held in 'administrative detention' by Israeli authorities since November last year, without being charged.
“Amnesty International has called for Al-Qiq to be put on trial or immediately released and I reiterate those calls.”ENDS
