Autism support must cover full range of services - McCorley
Sinn Féin MLA Rosie McCorley has said the extra £2m announced for the diagnosis of autism must be followed up with an investment in adult services.
Ms. McCorley said,
“I welcome the money being allocated by the health minister to address the back log in helping to identify children with autism.
“It is important that we follow this investment up by developing services when these children grow into adults.
“The number of children being presented for assessment has been growing and this money will allow a speedier conclusion for these families easing the pressure they are currently under.
“I am however concerned that services come to an abrupt halt when these children grow into adults and many families are left with little or no support.
“It is important we develop a range of services that deals with people from diagnosis to adulthood so that people with autism are given the opportunity to lead full and rewarding lives.”
