Legal Complaints and Regulation Bill will improve confidence in legal system- McKay

16 February, 2016

Sinn Féin MLA Daithi McKay has welcomed the passing of the Legal Complaints and Regulation Bill, which has adopted a number of proposals made, by Finance and Personnel Committee about making solicitors and barristers more accountable.

 Mr McKay said,

“I am delighted the bill has been passed today which will bring about the long-awaited reform of the existing system for handling complaints against solicitors and barristers.

“This is important in allowing members of the public a grievance procedure in the event they are dissatisfied with the service provided.

“Many people are afraid of complaining against solicitors and barristers. This new bill will help lessen fear and give confidence to those who have received a poor service.

“The establishment of a legal services oversight commissioner is a positive step for members of the public and will help bring transparency to complaints made regarding solicitors and barristers.”
