Labour/ Fine Gael government has failed the people of this state - Cllr Denise Mitchell

17 February, 2016 - by Denise Mitchell

Sinn Féin Councillor and General Election Candidate Denise Mitchell has said the Labour/ Fine Gael government has failed the people of this state in terms of housing.

Speaking at the launch of Sinn Féin’s housing plans, the Dublin Bay North Candidate said,

“A report from the Simon Communities of Ireland this morning revealed that a quarter of Irish adults are worried about being able to afford to keep a roof over their head. And nearly 20% are worried about losing their home.

“Figures like this are prevalent right across the 26 counties; the Labour/ Fine Gael government has failed the people of this state.

“It is an absolute disgrace that in 2016 our Government is failing to provide for and protect the people they claim to represent.

Cllr Mitchell continues,

“Sinn Féin in Government will not have the same reputation. We will develop Universal Design and Lifetime Adaptability Guidelines so new buildings can accommodate people with disabilities and save on future adaptation costs.

“We will frontload funding to Local Authorities with a good track record of drawing down funds and providing Traveller accommodation, with penalties for those who refuse to build needed Traveller accommodation.

“And we will increase funding for domestic violence refuges by €5.45 million in year one of government.

“Sinn Féin can tackle the housing crisis and undo the catastrophic policies of this government, ensuring the protection of all citizens.” ENDS
