Bombardier job losses a major blow to the economy - Ó Muílleoir
Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has said the 580 job losses announced by Bombardier were a massive set back to the local economy and more needs to be done to protect the manufacturing industry here.
Mr Ó Muilleoir said,
“I am distressed at the news that there is to be 580 redundancies at Bombardier given it is one of the biggest manufacturing employers in the North.
“Not only does this impact on those who lose their jobs but also has a knock-on effect on the local economy as these wages are removed.
“I am hoping when the new C-series goes into full production that we can see a reverse of this trend and see employment rise again.
“The Executive should engage with the provincial government in Quebec and with the Canadian Government to discuss the additional support they have recently given Bombardier amounting to at least $1bn investment in the CSeries Jet and draft a joint response.
“I have written to Bombardier CEO Michael Ryan to express my support to management and workers and stand ready to meet both and pledge full backing to any initiatives the Enterprise Minister might propose.
“The unions also have a major role to play and I will also be writing with them to discuss the situation.
“It is important we maintain and build upon our manufacturing industry if we are to develop a healthy economy, which delivers for all the people.
“It is important that Bombardier now works with these people in sourcing other employment, retraining and reskilling them for entry into the labour market so they are not unemployed for long.
“I will be supporting manufacturers in developing new markets so that we can not only consolidate but build upon this industry.”
