McMullan welcomes Minister O'Neill to Cushendall to meet local farmers
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan welcomed party colleague and Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill to Cushendall to meet with local farmers.
The East Antrim MLA said;
"I brought Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill to Cushendall to meet with local farmers to discuss their concerns and areas of importance to the agriculture industry.
"It was a very positive meeting and the minister listened to the experiences of the farmers and outlined the work she is doing to support them.
"She updated them on the Farm Business Improvement Scheme and how the £250m from it will be available to farmers in coming months.
"The farmers raised the importance of our EU membership, particularly in terms of payments and trade opportunities and were pleased with the minister's reassurance that Sinn Féin will campaign to remain in the EU.
"We also discussed the consultation on the future of Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) payments as this is of particular reference to hill farmers in areas like the Glens.
"Farm gate prices are a matter of concern for all farmers and Minister O'Neill provided details of what she is doing to help farmers such as setting up the supply chain forum, working to secure new export markets and actively supporting the establishment of the new agri-food marketing body.
"I will be following on from this meeting by organising a public meeting for farmers in the Glens area in the coming weeks."
