Serious Questions for European Commission on delayed publication of report – Boylan

29 February, 2016 - by Lynn Boylan MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has written to the European Commission demanding answers as to why a report highlighting the growing inequality and poverty in Ireland was held back until after the election.

The MEP for Dublin said:

“I want to know on whose authority the EU Commission decided to withhold this report.

“If the European Commission took it upon themselves to withhold it, then it will be yet another unacceptable example of this unelected body trying to influence the will of the voters.

“If, on the other hand, it was on the request of the outgoing government, then Enda Kenny has some serious questions to answer when he comes back before the Dáil.

“The report outlined how Irelands net childcare costs are the highest in the EU and are not only preventing women getting back into work but are exacerbating child poverty levels.

“It also highlighted gross levels of underfunding in public transport, infrastructure, and education. It cited its concerns around the housing shortage, homelessness and the levels of mortgage arrears.

“This report vindicates what Sinn Féin have been saying about the need to invest in public services and to bring an end to the austerity agenda.  The fact that someone either in the Commission or the Irish Government chose to deny the electorate this information is deeply concerning and I will do my best to ensure that the person responsible be held accountable.”
