Next government must commit to greater Garda resources- Cllr. Sorcha Nic Cormaic
Speaking following an attack on a member of An Garda Síochana in the area Cllr. Sorcha Nic Cormaic has called on the next government to recognise the threat that Gardaí and communities face on a daily basis from criminals, and to take positive steps to alleviate that threat.
Nic Cormaic said:
“The next government, in whatever shape or form that may be, needs to urgently tackle the issue of Garda resources. The recent attack in Hillview on a member of An Garda Síochana is both an attack on our police force and an attack on our community. I wish the injured Garda a speedy and full recovery.
Nic Cormaic continued:
“Fianna Fáil made commitments to addressing Garda resources during their election campaign. They campaigned on a pretext of a fairer Ireland, and it is now time for them to put their money where their mouth is. Time will tell whether their conversion to a fairer Ireland is a road to Damascus moment or whether it was an election ploy to position themselves as the cuddlier version of Fine Gael.
“The previous government’s austerity agenda created the environment in which we now see an increase in crime. Fine Gael have shown to be in complete denial on this issue. It is time that Fine Gael sit down and consider the impact that their policies have on this area. Their misguided decision to close Garda stations and reduce Garda numbers has done nothing but embolden criminals”.
Nic Cormaic added:
“Sinn Féin is committed to the reopening of Garda stations and is committed to increasing Garda resources. An increase in Garda presence is the best deterrent against criminal activity”.
