DETI should consider all-Ireland economy report - Murphy

1 March, 2016 - by Conor Murphy

Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has said he is disappointed the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment have said it has no plans to consider a major report on the all-Ireland economy.

Mr Murphy said;

"Last month the DETI committee discussed a report on the benefits of the All-Ireland economy produced by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation.

"We then asked the department to produce a written consideration of the report but we were told today the department has no plans to give it any detailed consideration.

"This is hugely disappointing and is indicative of the silo mentality that exists within some departments when it comes to growing the all-Ireland economy.

"The report made a series of recommendations aimed at promoting island-wide cooperation with a view to growing the economy so it is worrying that a department tasked with economic development would not even consider it.

"The committee agreed today to raise the lack of response to this report from the department directly with the Enterprise minister when he comes before the committee later this month."
