Gerry Adams nominates longest serving Sinn Féin TD to contest election for Ceann Comhairle
Speaking at Leinster House today, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD, said;
"Sinn Féin will seek cross party support for Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin as Ceann Comhairle for the 32nd Dáil. I am also calling for the Dáil to sit at least once a week from next week for Ministers Questions on the housing and health crises”.
“Last night Micheál Martin said that the formation of a government could take two months. This is completely unacceptable. The health and housing crises cannot be put on hold. There are still people on hospital trolleys, some 425 across the state yesterday. There are still children being brought up in hotels and this morning men and women woke up in the snow on the streets”.
“The ongoing realignment of Irish politics and the clear need for more representative, transparent and inclusive Dáil would be best served by having a Ceann Comhairle from the 3rd largest party and not from either of the two parties who have dominated politics and the Dáil until now.
“Sinn Féin will therefore nominate Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD for the position of Ceann Comhairle for the 32nd Dáil.
“A TD for 2 decades, Caoimhghín has gained respect from TD’s across all parties and independents. An experienced legislator Caoimhghín would make a very fair and impartial chair of Dáil proceedings.
"The Dáil is in need of an urgent step change in how it does business in a modern parliamentary democracy and Teachta Ó Caoláin is a candidate who could ably promote such reform.
“I am also calling for the Dáil to sit once a week, from next week, for Ministers questions on housing, health and other urgent issues.
“This would allow for proper scrutiny on the ongoing crises on these areas. Given the homeless emergency and the ongoing difficulties in the Health Service, Ministers need to come forward to account for themselves.”
