Failure to support Acht na Gaeilge a missed opportunity - Ní Chuilín
Sinn Féin MLA and Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has said unionists' failure to support an Irish Language Act is a missed opportunity to protect human rights and equality.
Ms Ní Chuilín said;
"It is disappointing that Unionists voted once again against an Irish Language Act at today's Executive meeting.
"Almost 13,000 people responded to a consultation I carried out and 95 per cent of those who responded called for an Acht na Gaeilge now.
"This was a missed opportunity to take a positive and progressive step for human rights and equality.
"Many within the unionist community have no objection to legislation to protect the rights of Irish language speakers. So this is clearly another case where the unionist people are ahead of their representatives.
"The Irish language belongs to everyone and threatens no-one.
"Sinn Féin remains committed to having an Acht na Gaeilge in place to ensure the rights of the Irish language community."
