Gerry Adams the only leader that can deliver a fair recovery - McDonald

10 March, 2016 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader, Mary Lou McDonald TD has nominated Uachtaráin Shinn Féin, Gerry Adams TD as Taoiseach.

Speaking in the Dáil today Deputy McDonald said:

“Ireland calls out for a leader with a vision that embraces this entire island. A vision that goes beyond the border, a vision that encompasses, both the north and south of Ireland and all its people.

“As the leader of the only all-Ireland Republican party, as leader of the largest all island political party, and as one of the architects of the Peace Process, Gerry Adams, has displayed qualities of strong leadership, courage and perseverance.

“He has shown clearly that he is someone who is willing to reach out, listen to and work with those who have opposed him. He has built peaceful relationships between the most bitter of opponents.

“Ireland calls out for a leader who will give hope back  to the people, to those who have struggled, and struggle still on the watch of previous governments.

“A leader who will protect the vulnerable, and the marginalised, our young people and our older citizens, who will create real opportunities for decent work and a decent standard of living

“A leader who will lift the burden on low and middle income families who have been crippled by burdens not of their creating, and overwhelmed by stealth taxes, like water charges and the family home tax.

“A leader who is not afraid to take on the elites who laid this economy and society low.

“In this centenary of the 1916 Rising, to achieve a truly fair Ireland, an Ireland we can be proud of, an Ireland in which all its people can say that they feel the recovery - then in order to achieve this, I am happy and honoured to propose Deputy Gerry Adams as Taoiseach.”
