Disconnect between rhetoric of the Dáil and the lives of the people – Tóibín
Sinn Féin TD Peadar Tóibín spoke in the first sitting of the 32nd Dáil today of the disconnect between the rhetoric of certain parties and the reality of the lives of Irish people.
Deputy Tóibín stated:
“The hundreds of thousands of Irish people who are unemployed, underemployed or emigrants from this country are in their situation because of the economic policies of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.
“This amounts to half a million Irish citizens who are the collateral damage of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael governance.
“Our health service has been deeply vandalised by the previous government. Delayed diagnosis and delayed treatment for hundreds of thousands of people has a tremendously damaging effect on their quality of life. Yet FF and FG’s answer is to delay the sitting of delay the sitting of the Dáil, to delay the TDs working on a solution.
“For the last four years we have had an immediate housing crisis and increasingly dire homelessness situation. To the 100,000 people waiting for a house, seeing hundreds of Local Authority houses closed up around the state the Taoiseach’s answer is to close Leinster Housing for the next few weeks.
“We cannot turn away from the realities and the immediacies of the crises of people outside of this chamber.
Deputy Tóibín concluded by saying:
“The Irish people have tolerance but that tolerance is a limited resource and it will be soon spent."
